I have been trying to get my site in Dmoz for about 4 1/2 months now. I category I submitted to does not have a volunteer. What is the best way to try to get my site into Dmoz

Go ahead and submit your URL to the most appropriate category. There is a category editor, but that editor may be in a category that's "higher up" than the category you're submitting to.
I wouldn't try to contact category editors--it will only complicate the process and frustrate you further. Submit and forget about it--and don't submit again. To be honest with you, 4 months isn't a long time to wait when it comes to DMOZ--I've got sites that have been waiting for over 2 years.
If there's no category editor, you might want to apply and volunteer your own services to edit that category.
