I was going through the queue of one of my directories today and was amazed at some of the crap that was awaiting review. With so many free submissions to wade through, if something is not quite right, it is more likely I will just delete and move on. The most common problems I see, other than a site being downright spammy, is the site listed in a wrong category, a very short or nonexistant description (I'm not taking time to write one for you!), an invalid URL (sometimes a typo, sometimes maybe a server down), or someone submitting several sites all dealing with similar topics (if you submit a dozen sites all dealing with International Trade Laws, this seems a little too spammy for my taste.)

So many people on forums such as this ask questions like "Why can't I get my site listed and fast?" or "Should I start my own directory?" Well, I brought some screenshots to help you understand what me and all other directory owners go through:

(1) www.portprophecy.com/pics/pending01.jpg
(2) www.portprophecy.com/pics/pending02.jpg
(3) www.portprophecy.com/pics/pending03.jpg

The first screenshot shows you someone who defies all the rules I've set. I specifically ask for no internal pages, no multiple submissions, include official names in title, etc... Took about 2 secs for me to click ban and the dozen or so pages he submitted went bye bye, hopefully forever.

The second group is the strangest of the lot. First is your standard online casino affiliate BS. The second is a web host who gives the URL of my site as his site's title! Then follows an asian furniture site submitting to SEO category and someone selling watches submitting to Science? DELETE DELETE DELETE DELETE...

The third is similar to the first. Someone spamming with about 5 or 6 of his p*nis pill sites. Banned and gone.

Keep in mind these are not something I had to search long and hard through my queue to find. This is a vast majority of what gets submitted. So the next time you see a directory owner or editor, give him or her a hug.

Yep. All too common.

Brain dead SERP PERP, and probably charging someone mega bucks for "professional site submission" too.

The ODP deletes several million items a year of such junk.

I learned many years ago to not expect anybody to read even the simplest submission guidelines. It’s part of the job that never ends. The only thing you can do about it is develop a fast and efficient submission system that can deal with spam in a way that requires the least possible amount of time and labor.
