It is a spam method that people use where they thought that they wouldn't get caught.

They were wrong.

it's also known as triangle linking, where site A links to site B, site B links to site C and site C links to site A all one-way but because they circle around, the search engines are able to track this and give less weight than a reciprocal link! (possibly)

Actually, the engines may to more than just discount the link values. if this practice extends across many domains all hosted form the same server & IP Address, then the engines may see this is a "Link farm" and label the whole lot as spam.

Avoid this practice - you know what it is, but don't use it.

I was wondering about the same server and IP address issue. Does anyone have any scientific proof or observations that this is/has happened? I think the notion of cheap multidomain hosting is fairly new.

But maybe the search engines were knocking down spammers with their own server boxes. But does anyone have proof or letters/emails/speeches from search engine management that they are doing this.

I like the scientific method. Everything else is paranoia and repeating other peoples paranoia.
