This seems backwards to me. Why would you submit your site to directories and engines BEFORE optimizing it with copy and meta? This doesn't make sense to me. But our SEO co gave us a timeline with submissions occuring BEFORE copywriting and optimization. Are they way off?

No they are not way off on that at all. Provided that you have a decently viewable website with all the legal info in place and no "coming soon" or under construction zones in toe, then yes... go for links and directory inclusions as long as you are going to be able to get over to the editor exactly what your company and website is all about without being rejected as a non entity.

Promoting your website and positioning it on the web is all about optimising your position. When to go forward and when to shut up should all be handled lovingly...important links should not be sought to early or too late.
Why would you submit your site to directories and engines BEFORE optimizing it with copy and meta?

Answer - because optimizing copy and meta has absolutely NOTHING to do with directories, portals, external links. As far as search engines go - um, I don't think anyone actually submits to a search engine these days. I don't!

This seems to be one of those things that people disagree on. I found this on the web

"Use the following checklist to be absolutely sure your site is submission-ready:

- Are all pages optimized? "

This is the response I got from the seo co.

"Some engines require it be done after the site is optimized, but since it is the home page that is submitted for the directories, this can be done earlier. The actual submissions for the web based listings are done at the end once the full optimization is uploaded."

I don't even understand what he is saying...

If they are talking about submitting to human edited directories and you have a website that works with correct contact details there is absolutely no reason to wait until it is "optimised". Submitting it now will get backlinks going and will help the website's strength in the long run.

When working with an SEO you should have some sort of trust factor to believe that what they are advising is correct so the campaign will work.

This is why we always recommend thorough research before hiring an SEO (or any other professional). Always ring clients and check results ensuring they operate within Industry standard guidelines.

The only valid reason to wait with directory submissions would be "not all content present yet".

Human reviewers look at the content of a site. If they come across "Coming Soon" or see a site that has very little actual content, they might find the site unsuitable for listing.

Yes, they are looking for legit quality sites, nothing to do with how a site is optimised unless it is optimised badly with backdoor domains, affilate links everywhere, popups/unders/, redirectors etc etc. Refer to the individual directory guidelines for more information.
