There are a few web directories that it will be good if you can have your website listed on them but it can be considered as over-optimization when most of the incoming links to your website are from web directories.

I have written an article about this and have also listed 8 web directories that you should have your website listed on them. You should not waste your time and money for submitting your websites to any other web directory. I know web directory owners will get mad at me but I have to share the truth with webmasters and internet marketers: (( URL REMOVED ))

I am not experienced enough to know if your facts in the article are correct or not, but am very interested in what the more experienced/knowledgeable members here think.

some of those are paid directories and and kind of expensive to submit to, of course they should be worthy otherwise noone would be willing to pay to be listed there.

My Lord!

Folks, look through this list.

Pick the ones you can afford and start at the top of your list - no need to go through all of them, but you can if you wish.

Next time web, send me half that and I'll take care of directory submissions for ya... oh, wait, I just told you my secret...drat - oh well, it's easy if you know where to look. wink

"My websites was banned by MSN and penalized by Google and Yahoo."

I don't think you are being truthful. How can links to your sites in directories have got you penalized? You must have been penalized for other reasons.

I read with interest your comment in the searchengineforum that only 8 directories are worth submitting.

I have submitted my sites to 1,000s of directories but found out my sites were banned by Google for oversubmitting!

So I wondered if you can let me know which 8 directories are worth submitting and whether they are expensive?

Hi,

I'm just a bit curious, about how much did you spend? Did it help in your ranking?

There are thousands of directories and 99% of them are worthless.

Google recently banned dozens of low quality sites from their index.

I believe that Google, Yahoo and the other engines will not penalize you for back links as you can not control who links to your site only the other way around. Correct me if I am wrong.

Broadly you are right.

But if the link pattern involves your links, then you can be in trouble.

So reciprocal linking to a cheap and nasty directory is NOT one of those "it can't do any harm" things.

There's plenty more than eight directories that are absolutely fine, and many of them are free - the OP 'forgot' that many local and niche-specific directories are better in SEO terms, better in terms of direct referrals - and mostly free.

Once you know what you are looking for, you can find a few more than eight that will be right for you.

And that will be enough, if they are Quality Directories.

Never forget Quadrille's Oft-Quoted Sixth Law:

Never submit to directories; submit to Quality Directories - and know the difference

There are tens of thousands of general directories, 95% of which are little more than link exchanges or 'made for advertising' clones. None of that lot have any SEO value, and could damage your site.

It is only that small group of quality directories that matters in any way; choose them yourself, or use a submission service that demonstrates that it understands the difference.

C'mon. I wanna see the full list of Quad's Ten Laws or however many it is...

You've hinted at several of them in various posts over the last few weeks.

I want to say something.

Thoughtful listing in appropriate directories is often useful - for traffic and for links.

Any paid for listing should be monitored to gauge ROI - keep them or get rid of them.

One of the major problems for smaller websites when listing on "directories" is the dilution of their own importance, brand or offer.

It is very common to see a website give their content, their key phrases and their uniqueness to larger players... the result is that they are diluted or weaker in the search engines eyes.

If you do not have a really healthy balance and control over your own content and position then how are the search engines to know if you are important or not?

Of course it is good to link out and have links in, but shouldn't that all be done in a sensible manner?

Try balance and logic and you will find that there are many directories that are worth listing in (depending on your target markets), but not all (not so many) may be appropriate for you. And if they are they should be handled individually and with care as to how you actually pin yourself to them.
