I looked at a few but am not sure if I can trust them.
Can anyone recommend a service that is not going to waste my time and money or, even worse, get me spammed!
Thanks

Do it yourself. That's the best way to go.

Thanks for your reply.
It take a long time to find the right directories and then manually submit to each one. Do you know of any short cuts?

Check this list - select the ones you want to be found in, either paid or free, then go to it.
Remember, you'll only need to do this once, so do it, don't try for a short cut and call it finished.

Thanks for all your replies and help.
How important do you think any of the paid directories are? Would any of you suggest paying for these directory submissions or would a submission to all the free directories provide quite a lot of SEO value without having to use those that charge.

I personally advocate a balanced approach, bearing in mind your budget.
If you can afford to pay for none of them, hit the free ones at least.
That list descends in order based on the PR value of each directory's main page. So, in theory, you'd want to start at the top and work your way down, regardless of costs.
In the real world, your wallet has some say in things.
If you skip a directory or two (or ten), don't sweat it. Do what you can and what makes sense for your individual situation.
If your situation is such that you have zero budget, hit the free directories and call it a day. In the end, you're dotting an "i" or crossing a "t" with this stuff - it's not goign to be the Magic Bullet that rockets you to stardom by itself.

I am really sad that our original directory list link is not here.. I can't even remember it - "top 100"? it was ever so good...
do you have the URL? I personally don't go about submitting much so I am a little rusty. (these days, I tend to hunt down who I want and go for their jugular.
The live flow of a site doesn't happen in isolation.. tap in and get connected where and when YOU think it is appropriate to your target market.

I don't have the list but the one that SportsGuy gave is quite good so I will start going through that one.
Thanks again to everyone for the advice - time to get to work!

Thanx a lot SportsGuy! The list really helped me to allocate a fixed budget to gain link popularity.

DO a search in Google for manual directory submission.
Check that they will give you a full report and that you don't have to pay upfront (sometimes it helps to contact them if they have a buy now button).
If they offer screenshots os submissions that is the best.
There are some quality services that are very cheap. Shop around.

I would be careful to vary my description and title (if possible) with each directory listing, so it is unique to that directory. In other terms that job cannot be automated and must be done by a human. Hire a trustworthy person if you do not have the time to do it yourself. They can use Roboform or a similar program to fill out the fields, but they have to modify the description and title as much as possible at each submission.

OK, while I agree with mark here, I will differ slightly.
I personally feel that there are only really a handful - call it 20 - of directories worth getting links in, so just invest the time and do it manually.
This really is simple work folks, so don't try for a short cut here - roll up your sleeves and spend 2 hours doing this.

On top of the handful - seek and find places that are unique to your target market, location and unique features, industry or specific product. Obviously it is not a thing that can be automated, obviously it is something that requires work.
Congrats to Mark Wolk - you recieve the Excell profound statement of the month award!
It is SO true that in everything you do on and off line the better way to do it is to THINK and match everything for your target audience - marry what you are doing in the environment in which your are doing it to make it sing for your potential customers.

Are needed for directory submission, it takes usually 4-6 weeks for free directory listing. Paid takes lesser time
