I have a client site that changed it's url last year, with the old url redirecting to the new one. From a link building standpoint, would it be beneficial to request of the webmasters to change the old url's to the new one?

The redirect transfers some of the score over, so it is not imperative that the other sites change over. In fact, if the other sites are doing things right, then they should notice that their outgoing link hits a redirect and fix it themselves.

In other words, don't spend a mass of time on it.

Maybe let a few know if you want to. If you haven't the time, it isn't important.
