Just wanted to let all the lurkers out there know that IF they read and follow the advice handed out in this great resource, they can get Yahoo listings. Just got my notice today, and I am pleased to say the least. If the title of the post does not make it clear, I just want to thank all you guys for sharing your wisedom to help us. We really, really appreciate it.

>>...anyone know anything?<<Yes. The character of "Lumpy" on "Leave It To Beaver" was played by Frank Banks. Unfortunately, that's the limit of my knowledge, and I have no da***d idea where ODP went today. Was wonderin' the same.

Congrats Chris!
Also, thanks for the reminder that few problems are "unique". If people will read the threads they are likely to find their problem addressed.
I prefer to address the unique ones here, not my email. The reason being that some "lurker" may very well be in the same situation.
Good luck with your site! [This message has been edited by Janet Berg.]

My best guess is that it relates to the new server that dmoz.org was moved to on Tuesday. These things always seem to be problematic. But it's just a guess. And what has Frank done since leaving the Beaver? [This message has been edited by kfander (edited 03-16-2001).]

Since DMOZ is mostly for volunteer, who owns it? The domain, server, and etc.....Is it possible that one day someone is about to reclaim the DMOZ name and make a profit from it or will stay a volunteer project? I am just curious.

Frank Bank has done couple of "New" Beaver TV series and a TV movie - High School U.S.A. (1983) with Michael J. Fox, Nancy McKeon,Todd Bridges,Angela Cartwright, Bob Denver,Dwayne Hickman and a number of other "child" actors. On point, I agree with kfander - probably related to the server move.

Yeah, it's definately something to do with the new server. Maybe they switched IP's and it takes a day or two for it to propogate the net.

The Open Directory Project is "owned" by Netscape (a subsidiary of AOL) which rents the domain names, pays the professional staff, maintains the servers (apparently not often enough ), etc.The data itself is given away free, and Netscape has promised to continue this. Lots of people (try to?) make money off of websites that use ODP data -- including AOL/Netscape itself, Google, Lycos, etc.

Why is it that Dmoz goes down occasionally, and its not only for a few hours its days at a time. I just wish the executives at Netscape/Aol would take this service serious. They have the 2nd best directory in the world and yet they are always going down like its some type of amateur operation. I do understand that its non profit, but maybe that should look at ways to make money so these types of things don't happen. Sorry just kind of frustrated, I just wish that they knew that a lot of people rely on their directory.

I have been editing for 2 years. This is only the second major failure during that time and I edit daily. The down time last week was planned and was for a server move. I wouldn't sweat it, this is temporary and will be up soon, plus most of the traffic generated from ODP listings is from AOL and other portals using the data.

Hi,This is my first time posting so I hope this is acceptable. I noticed that my listings in DMOZ have dissapeared. They were accepted over 2 months ago. Could this be because of the server switch? Should I resubmit? I really don't want to create more work for the editors. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
