Google has multiple versions of their index in play at any one time, and several experiments that are only on a few selected IP addresses. Google usually says nothing about what the different versions are, but did give out the IP address of their new "BigDaddy" version while it was still in early testing.
By trying multiple IP addresses directly, you can see a range of results, some of which are going to contribute to what the public will actually see in a few days or weeks time. If you are doing badly at some IP addresses it can be useful to track that result to make sure that it is only an experiment that doesn't continue, rather than being the main results that are going to be shown world-wide next week.

People that copy and paste others peoples work without attribution of original source are very easy to spot.

What are these URLs?
http://gfe-ar.google.com/
http://gfe-fg.google.com/
http://gfe-po.google.com/
Where do they fit into things?
Are there any more like these?

Reports of the demise of the old www-sj.google.com style Google datacentre URLs (back in 2004) were way too early.
They are over here instead, and have grown in number:
gfe-ar, gfe-au, gfe-bf, gfe-bp, gfe-bu, gfe-bx, gfe-cw, gfe-dc, gfe-ed, gfe-eh, gfe-ff, gfe-fg, gfe-gv, gfe-he, gfe-hk, gfe-hs, gfe-hu, gfe-ik, gfe-in, gfe-jc, gfe-jp, gfe-kc, gfe-kr, gfe-lm, gfe-lo, gfe-mc, gfe-nf, gfe-nz, gfe-od, gfe-po, gfe-py, gfe-qb, gfe-rn, gfe-ro, gfe-tw, gfe-ug, gfe-ui, gfe-va, gfe-wr, gfe-wx, gfe-yo
There are 41 class-C blocks in my earlier list, and 41 URLs in the above "two letter" list.
Additionally, as well as the gfe-cw.google.com type URLs, many of them also respond to these formats too:
gfe-cw2.google.com and gfe-cw3.google.com
Just a few also respond to this format: gfe-cw4.google.com

For each of these gfe-xx.google.com addresses, the base gfe-xx responds at the x.x.x.104 IP address for that particular class-C block, and the additional URLs (when available) for gfe-xx2.google.com responds at x.x.x.99 and for gfe-xx3.google.com responds at x.x.x.147 as shown. For a small number, there is also gfe-xx4.google.com at x.x.x.103 (cw4, nf4, gv4).
gfe-ar - 72.14.223.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-au - 72.14.211.x - x104 x99
gfe-bf - 72.14.209.x - x104 x99

gfe-ik - 66.249.91.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-in - 216.239.53.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-jc - 64.233.187.x - x104 x99
gfe-jp - 66.249.89.x - x104 x99
gfe-kc - 216.239.51.x - x104 x99
gfe-kr - 66.102.11.x - x104 x99
gfe-lm - 66.102.9.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-lo - Not Responding - assume 66.249.87.x block?
gfe-mc - 66.102.7.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-nf - 64.233.183.x - x104 x99 x147 x103
gfe-nz - 64.233.163.x - x104 x99
gfe-od - 64.233.161.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-po - 72.14.253.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-py - 64.233.167.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-qb - 72.14.205.x - x104 x99
gfe-rn - 64.233.171.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-ro - 72.14.203.x - x104 x99
gfe-tw - 72.14.235.x - x104 x99 x147
gfe-ug - 66.249.93.x - x104 x99
gfe-ui* - 64.233.179.x - x104 (* same IP as gfe-hs)
gfe-va - 216.239.37.x - x104 x99
gfe-wr - 64.233.185.x - x104 x99
gfe-wx - 66.249.83.x - x104 x99
gfe-yo - 64.233.169.x - x104 x99
Note the duplication of gfe-hs and gfe-ui and the lack of response from gfe-lo at the present time.
The old class-C blocks at 216.239.33.x (www-ex), 216.239.35.x (www-sj), 216.239.41.x (www-fi), and 216.239.55.x (www-zu) are long ago defunct.
For most Class-C blocks, each of these can be used as the final part of the IP address, and most of them will work:
17, 18, 19, 44, 80, 81, 83, 84, 91, 93, 95, (98), 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, (105), (106), 107, 115, 133, 147, 184, 189, (210) and 214.
I have not found any equivalent gfe-xxn.google.com type URLs for any IP addresses except those that end in 99, 104, 147, or 103.

Google China has its own DCs.
They use the following IPs for www.google.cn and these cannot be directly acessed by IP address from here:
66.249.89.160
66.249.89.161
66.249.89.162
64.233.189.160
64.233.189.161
64.233.189.162
66.102.7.160
66.102.7.161
66.102.7.162
72.14.203.160
72.14.203.161
72.14.203.162
From this list: ruscoe.net/google/google-subdomains/ I am also finding stuff like:
asia.google.com located at 66.102.7.x x104 x99 x147.
europe.google.com/ located at 66.102.9.x x104 x99 x147.
america.google.com/ located at 66.102.9.x x104 x99 x147.
I am not sure what these are for, but they do exist:
kh0.google.com and kh1.google.com and kh2.google.com and kh3.google.com all located at 216.239.59.x x91 x93.
Additionally, I found gjm.google.com located at 216.239.53.210 too - but even though there is a search box, the search is not functional at that URL.
Likewise 216.239.63.210 is non-functional, and I haven't found an associated domain name yet.
And finally, sandbox.google.com - someone has a very warped sense of humour over there.

Hmm. If I had found this page http://search.web-sun.com/zatu/data_center.html a bit earlier it would have saved me a bit of work here.
Seem like the Japanese are many steps ahead of us all over here: http://search.web-sun.com/g_search.html. That is way better than McDar any day.
Additionally, it looks like gfe-ar and gfe-fg and gfe-po are quite new it seems.

I amazed that this information didn't make it out to the wider world sooner than this:

(*) Note that gfe-hs and gfe-ui both point to the same IP address at the moment, and that that address was the test "Big Daddy" datacentre.
I assume that gfe-hs (x104) and gfe-hs2 (x99) are the regular names, and that they later aliased gfe-ui (x104) on to it for "Big Daddy" testing purposes internally, as in gfe-ui.google.com for the full URL.

Some new IP addresses for www.google.cn discovered today:
59.151.21.100
59.151.21.101
These are in a new Class-C block, that I haven't seen Google use before.

If for the last few months you had looked at gfe-gv you would have seen roughly the same as you also saw at www.google.com most of the time.
If you had looked at gfe-eh, you would have seen results that were quite different.
A few weeks later though, and the results that were only at gfe-eh and a couple of others, now seem to be almost everywhere.
Looking at certain datacentres sometimes allows you to see what Google is working on towards the next version of their index.
There is never a need to check all of them. A small sample is usually enough. The posts just above also show Google adding to their capacity in recent weeks.
