    Hi

Due to some internal dealings my client now has the opportunity to have a reciprocal link exchange with a top site in the UK. They have agreed to have link to my client's site in the left hand navigation.

Their website has 5000 pages. Although it looks like a great way to boost link popularity, I think it may be looked upon unfavourably by google as it is too many links too quick.

Does anyone have any idea about the issues related to this? With jagger updates this might get even worse, is that correct?

    Thanks for your time.

sitewide links are not a good thing. if you have to reciprocate the link, it would be better to have it from one prominent page on the site. just make sure the link is on topic.

I totally agree. One link on their home page is good enough.

"sitewide links are not a good thing."

If it's just for link popularity and increasing search engine ranking, and is unlikely to be seen or used, it may or may not have a negative effect, but probably won't have a positive effect, so you'd be better off exchanging a single link. On the other hand, if both you and the other site stand to gain a substantial amount of direct, noncompetitive traffic, it would probably be worthwhile. Depends on how much traffic you'll get, and how much you're willing to risk losing (if anything) in the search engines.

Question I thought that link farming was wrong. I found a site that has over a thousand reciprocal links from its own site and google is ok with this. the site [link removed]
    Please investigate. Thankyou

I understand what you guys are saying about sitewide links being bad if the site has a reciprocal link. What if the site does not have a reciprocal link to me, is a sitewide link still negative or inaffective?

Hard to say an absolute answer drewgainor - but Google can pick up on sitewide links regardless if recip. Doesn't always, but can be negative or inaffective.

One of the problems here is that cross-linking is the original way to get traffic. Links in strategic places on related but non-competitive sites are a good source of qualified traffic, and if you get enough of them, you have a good cushion against the whims of search engines. You can almost make yourself impervious to them.
For instance, if you have a mortgage site that's linked to every page of a local real estate site, that could bring you a lot of qualified traffic. So could a lot of other similar sites. But, if webmasters allow policies of search engines--or fear of repercussions--- stop them from interlinking, then search engines will gain total control of the internet. Not a very good scenario.
