We changed the names (URL) of six pages in the website in hopes of upping our search position. We left the old pages, however all the links from the home page and site map go to the new pages. Google has re-indexed the site, but still shows the old pages in search results. If I try to search for the new page in Google, they aren't found.
So my sense is that Google really isn't 'crawling' the site, only checking the pages it already knows about. Is this correct? How do you get Google to access NEW pages in your site?
Does submitting to the Sitemap program help?
Thanks!

They ignore the new URLs as duplicate content. You need to get rid of the old pages, but still have something in place for visitors that continue to arrive at those pages for the next few months or more.
You need to either set up a 301 redirect for each of those six pages, or replace the OLD pages with a normal HTML page that says: "This page has moved to...." and have a normal HTML clickable link there for the visitor to click on. I would also add the <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> too.
AVOID using a meta refresh, and especially avoid any sort of JavaScript redirect. Those are used by spammers to fool search engines, and if you use them Google may think you are spamming them and drop your site.

hmmm ... I would implement a simple custom 404 error page in this case and simply delete all old pages... this would also cater for changed pages in the future... If there is a major URL change then yes 301 re-direct would be a great help as would checking backlinks to make sure folks are all pointing in the right direction!

The custom 404 page is a good idea if you are always renaming pages or deleting old pages. That makes less maintenance for you to have to keep up with, whilst still pointing visitors in the right direction.
In this case, I believe that the 6 pages kept the same content, and merely changed their URL. I would never do that; there is little advantage in having "keyword in URL" and much to be lost from having duplicate content, or by losing the PR from all the backlinks pointing to the old names.

Thanks for the input.
We do have a generic '404' page that has links to the main pages of the site. I did rename the pages just to include the keywords. I had read several places that would help with SE placement. There are no outside links to the pages (unfortunately).
