I got this link to a video of a lecture given by a Google employee to university students. Ever wondered how Google stored so much data and how come it is so fast?
[link]
It contains important information on how Google ranks results. However, I am not sure I understand correctly. I wonder if someone could explain what does it mean by shards of data and why does Google need to have separate index and document servers.
Enjoy

That is a good video. Here is an article with similar content Peeking Into Google
Regarding shards, I don't know anything more than what I learn thru articles, etc ... but here is what this one says -
Google replicates the Web pages it caches by splitting them up into pieces it calls "shards." The shards are small enough that several can fit on one machine. And they're replicated on several machines, so that if one breaks, another can serve up the information. The master index is also split up among several servers, and that set also is replicated several times. The engineers call these "chunk servers."
So a shard is a part of a webpage. Google doesn't just cache the webpage, but breaks it into parts and saves each of those. That's my understanding, based on what it says in the article.
