    Hi,

I'm new here, thanks for the forum! I used to be number one on google for a certain keyword for well over a year, and about 2 or 3 weeks ago, I dropped down to number 6 or 7. My PR has stayed the same, which is a little confusing to me. Also, a lot of pages, that were at least on page 2 or so, are not no where near that.My traffic has dropped to almost nothing. I tried the site:domain.com -inurl:www and I have 301 pages listed. The problem is, most of the pages that are listed were linked to an old message board, that I have deleted. Any suggestions on how to get those unlisted? They have been there for a long time, and I just realized it when I did the site:domain.com -inurl:www so I am wondering if that is what brought my site down since it wasn't a problem before now? Any help would be appreciated. The reason I had deleted the pages, were that the posts were a spammer that had posted links to their website, and posted them in a way that it took me a long time to even know that they were even there. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Welcome to sef!

Couple comments for starters. A drop to 6 to 7 is not that major. You should expect some fluctuations. That's actually good news, as since your site is not penalized/banned you can improve your situation.

Regarding rankings dropping but not pr, that is the way it works some times. PR is not equated to rankings but something that is coorelated with rankings. There are over a 100 factors and PR is just one and not the most important.

I don't think the issue is the forum links mentioned.

Has the competition changed? For example, do the same sites rank in the top ten or is there new competition that's a factor?

    Hi, thanks!

Well, from number 1 to number six or seven wouldn't be that bad in itself. But, it looks like a lot of pages that were on page two or three have dropped down to where they are not even in the top ten pages. My traffic has dropped way down from this also.

The old forum pages that are in the supplemental reports had links in the description that shows on google to sites like gambling and pharmaceutical companies. A lot of them are pretty much the same, so I was wondering if that is what it was. But again, they have been there a long time, and this has just started happening in the last several weeks.

The competition seems to be the same ones that were on the first page, but they are also in different posistions than what they were.

Thanks for explaining the PR to me!

Do you think this could be from the big change in Google over the past few months?

    Thanks!

There is always change on Google.

In fact, if you access different datacentres by using direct IP addresses for them, you will find that there are three different versions of the index out there right now.

OOPs, sorry, yes, Google is always changing...I meant to say the change over to the google daddy thing! Sorry about that.

How do I find the different IP addresses for the datacenters?

Hover your mouse over the "cache" link when you do a search, and you'll soon build up a list of IP addresses they use.

Alternatively search the forum and Google to see if anyone else has already listed them. smile

I have a similar problem. I had the website I am working for positioned at #9. I got to the position after I had changed the content optimized the page etc. within a matter of 2 weeks it dropped to #177. This is a drastic drop. When I compared to the websites ranked in the top 10. My site has better content etc. Is it because it's a new site? Could I be in a sand box? Does sandbox apply for all keywords or only the most competitive ones?

It's drivign me crazy, since my client was happy that I got the positon high, but now it has really dropped.
    Thanks

In my experience websites are always more volatile soon after they get well listed, sometimes they can be up and down every week until one day they start to stabilise.

The problem is when you first get a good listings its as though you have finally made it. The disapointment of losing them usually leaves people confused. What you have to do is keep doing the same things that got you there for a while and eventually your website should become sticky.

Cajuns is a different issue as he was listed for a long time, this usually means the website has a problem which is currently not obvious and will need further research.
