Hello Everybody, You all know the out come for "site:www.mysite.com" this will show all the www pages indexed by google. When you type this usually you will get index page as first page and followed by all other pages.

To my surprise for one of my site I am not getting index page as first list but instead index page is listed at 106th position. I am confused now, there is no ranking for site now the ranking quite fine earlier. Will this site:www.mysite.com cuase any problem to ranking?

I mean, will no listing of index page first can be anything related to down in ranking? If yes then what could be the solution.?

    Your expert opinion please

Do you have a 301 redirect from the non www version of the site to the www one?

What do you get for the search site:mysite.com -inurl:www

    Hey JK.

It's not written in stone that the index page shows first when performing this search.

Watch the info shown with that index page that is listed, though - is it showing as "Supplamental Result"?

If so, that means it's likely been tagged as duplicate content and will be removed from the index.

    Try this next test:

Type into your address bar (in Firefox of IE) your domain as follows:

    http://domain.com
    http://www.domain.com

What we're trying to see is how the domain resolves - basically, you'd like to see the non-www version change to show the www version in the address bar.

If it does not, then it'll need to be fixed.

The engines often don't "get" that it's the same site and penalize you for having what appears to be dupe content on each domain (each version of the URL is considred unique and individual). By pointing the non-www version to the www-version of the domain, this can be avoided (unless you actually HAVE duplicated pages - that's just wrong and you're on your own! wink ).

Now, I'm not saying this IS what's causing this situation, but it may be a factor.

If this is NOT the issue, start again.

Also, the order the results of THAT particular search are returned in is less important that where individual pages actually rank for normal searches.

Always remember that each individual page acts as an entry point for users to your site.

Lots of websites have internal pages which rank VERY well for phrases, but an index page which ranks somewhere around your socks - nothing to worry about.

I typically use that search to monitor things like whether my new pages are being picked up by the index at G, or when changing and 301 rediretcing, are the old pages getting replaced with the newer pages.

    HTH - and remember - don't panic.

    Duane

    I agree with Sportguy,

My experience with this is that if the default url is not in the first 5 then it has been devalued in some way, this is especially true of smaller sites.

Check to see if there is a non www version as sportguy says if there is then Google doesnt know which one to list and has devalued the real one.

    [link]
    and
    [link]

bring up my site on the browser.

I was never aware that I had TWO different sites. Do I. How can I tell? How do I fix the prob.

    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

Modify this code and add it to your htaccess file:

    Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite.com [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

One follow up question.... Thanks for the help by the way...

I (<--novice) created my site with Front Page and I just read that I may screw up my site if I add or change an .htaccess file in my directory.

    Advice please.

It will be fine to modify the file. If your FrontPage settings become corrupt, it is a simple task to reinstate them but it should be fine anyway.

Download the file and use a text editor to add the code. Make sure you transfer the file in ascii mode.

    Thanks for the response...

    2 more questions

    1. How do I know I'm transferring in ascii mode?
    2. I cannot find an .htaccess file in my site directory anywhere. Is it possible that I don't have one?

Alex - what type of hosting do you have? Windows based or Linux based.

If Windows based, you will not have an .htaccess file. If Linux based, you simply may not have one, but they're very easy to create and there's lots of code already poste din the forums here for you to copy, mod & paste for your own uses.

First step - what's the hosting platform?

Your FTP program may also be set to "hide filenames that start with a dot", so look in the FTP settings first and check that out.
