Alright guys I need your help, I've done a lot of research on this but I still haven't found a clear cut way to do it. My site is hosted on a shared windows 2003 server. My pages are .htm pages. Do I need to do a redirect for non-www URLS to www. If so, how do I do it.

If found a ton of information on non-www to www on apache servers but not much info for windows servers.

Check profile for URL

Ok, let's see now.

The first concern I have for you is the share dhosting on the Windows platform.

Typically, these types of redirects are applied at the server level, as opposed to just the domain - meaning all websites on the server will repsond this way, as opposed to just your one site responding to the command.

Many hosting companies will not implement the 301 redirect you need to make this happen, though. Even though it SHOULD be a blanket policy for all hosts running shared services, IMO.

So, your first step is to speak with your host to see if they are willing to do this for you - some are, some aren't - Godaddy definitely will not do this.

Next up - and this is the route I personally took - I switched to a VDS (virtual dedicated server) - this allowed me to move to Linux and run an .htaccess file - problem solved (for about 4 times the cost each month ($40 v. $10/month))

Again, check with your host for options - a good host will work with you to help you out - Godaddy is NOT a good host in this regard, and their Customer Service is often somewhat less than service - more like idle suggestions... wink

I have not changed because the uptime is good and things are fine for the moment - basically, I'm lazy and it's working...

Now, as for actual data on 301 redirecting within the Windows environment, it's tougher, but can be done.

Here's a reference thread we pulled togther on the whole 301 topic in general - might be some new sources for ya. smile

You need ISAPI rewrite for windows.

Yes, you do need the redirect in place. Check this forum or Google for Google Duplicate Content or for 301 redirect or for www and non-www for more information. The <base> tag can also be useful: <base href="http://www.domain.com/"> on every page of the site.
