On looking around the net I see the same old lists of the various Google datacentre IP addresses everywhere. We know that Google has grown in size in the last few years, yet most lists still have data from 2004 on them. I always wonder why tools like McDar chose the particular few dozen IPs that they check for results. I often wonder if they are still a representative sample of all of the available Google datacenter IP addresses. It always puzzed me that for some ranges, such as 64.233.x.x there were several dozen available IP addresses, but for the 66.249.x.x range I only ever saw 3 or 4 IP addresses listed. Surely there were more? I also wondered if there were any new IPs that have recently come online that haven't yet been listed. So, one afternoon I set out to find out... This new list of Google DataCentre IP addresses is almost three times longer than anything else currently online. Entries with an - X are for datacentre IP addresses that are no longer online; most having stopped in 2003 or 2004. For the most talked-about commonly used DataCenter IP addresses over the last few years, Google has actually indexed their own homepage content at the IP address discussed (because many sites have linked directly to the page). They haven't yet done this for many of the new IP addresses on this list. That suggests that many of these IP addresses are new - perhaps some are for datacentres that have come online only in the last few months. |

Am I correct that all Google DataCentre IPs are in just these blocks? 64.233.x.x 66.102.x.x 66.249.x.x 72.14.x.x 216.239.x.x Are there any others at all? |

Don't forget those IP addresses that they use when they're not identifying themselves as Googlebot. And the IPs that they use to crawl that aren't actually owned by Google. |

These are just the IP addresses where you get a Google Search homepage, often identified as "Google English". At the moment, there are at least three different sets of search results spread across them. Some are very different. |

OK, now I understand. I was looking at my list that combines datacenter IPs with the crawler's IPs--most will resolve to a Google search if you put the IP in the browser, so I have a list that's a combined list and separate lists for the Google IPs that don't involve the bots. |

Further research reveals that everyone has been looking at only about 20% of the datacentres that really exist. I found this list, and even it does not include some of the stuff that I found on my own the other day. However, this list does include a lot of stuff that I have never seen before. The list gets longer and longer. I have found a way to simplify it, but now it doesn't list each IP fully. There are three other Class-B blocks that might be used at some time in the future: 8.6.x.x 64.68.x.x 209.85.x.x They are not in use at the moment as far as I can tell. Interesting list: http://ws.arin.net/whois/?queryinput=google |

Some lists also mention the 66.249.87.x block but these do not work at the moment: 66.249.87.104 66.249.87.99 These I found today, the only IPs that end in x.x.x.210: 216.239.53.210 216.239.63.210 You can get a search box up, but trying to search for anything simply results in a "connection refused" error. |

So how many physical data centers are we looking at here? These seem to be just datacenter IP addresses themselves. I took a look at your ARIN search and noticed that it has the AS routing numbers which can give hints at the separation of network groups. McDar says as of January 2005 they had 26 datacenters. An article I just read mentioned that they have data centers in Dublin, Ireland, California, Virginia(most likely the old Exodus facilities in reston/herdon) and now new facilities in Oregon with their Project O2 facilities in the Dalles and lastly new facilities in Atlanta. And this is only a partial list focused on the US. |

They have some in the US, the Netherlands, and in Ireland, and had (still have?) some in Switzerland, and they are now also in China too. |
