It has to do with Google's sandbox. You can find a lot of info on this forum about the sandbox but basically, with a new site, Google will take 6-12 months before it will start allowing your site to rank well. You may show up for some very very specific searches (like your company name) and you may show up on Google for a very short period of time before you are put on the "waiting list" but all in all, it just takes time. Getting relavant incoming links and working on your site is the best thing to do while you wait.

Do a search on "Google Sandbox" for more info.

PS - If waiting isn't something you want to do, Google AdWords is a good way to get up and running immediately.

At this moment only way to get some instant boost is doing some PPC and at the same time do some directory sibmission to yahoo, msn, dmoz, botw.

Soon you will see some PR and you will have 1 way links established. See if you can do some press release or news submission to say that there is a newly launched site for your company.

Each site will be treated differently by the sandbox. If you have a site where there's little to no competition, you may rank well pretty quickly. Other sites may take a year before they show up in Google. Sometimes, there may be no rhyme and reason. For the first 6-12 months, really focus on Yahoo and MSN. If you can get it so that you're doing really well on those two, you know you are on the right track. Then, it's mostly just a waiting game for Google.
