I joined the company 2 months ago to help with SEO. My colleague who was already here developed new css governed template. The template seems clean to me as it use <div> positioned layers for layout and cuts down on HTML code.
The company has 14 sites that where developed using DW. The code was less than perfect and there was a lot of crosslinking and duplicate content.
The duplicate content has been eliminated and my colleague changed index pages only on 5 sites about 3 months ago.
2 weeks ago we noticed significant drop in Google ranking for those 5 sites. The site that used to be No 1 for 5 years with old messy code is now No 5 for main keyphrase that is also contained in our domain name. No 1 site for the same keyphrase seems much less relevant than our site.
We are puzzled with those SERP results. I would appreciate if anyone could give us a clue why something like this would happen. We are based in UK and target UK only.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, it sounds like you're going about it the right way. Why not place the URL in your profile and somebody will have a look at it?

You didn't say whether the body text has changed or whether the title and Metas have changed too.
Has it?
