I read the "301s Again" post.
My clues, for my website, are:
    3170 results when I search for site:domain.com
    1060 results when I search for site:domain.com -inurl:www
    3170 results when I search for site:www.domain.com

I do not have a 301 redirect, but my htt://domain.com does not exists.
I said to my webmaster to set a page not found. Infact when I search it on
my internet explorer browser it returns an error (not found).
The strange thing is that on
    site:domain.com -inurl:www
there are 1060 results and google displays urls within the search like www.mydomain.com/pages.php
    instead of
    mydomain.com/pages.php

My website is on my profile.
Can someone help me to underestand why I have such results?
I think that a good results should be 0 when I search for site:domain.com -inurl:www.
    Is it correct?

To get there, you need to place a 301 redirect in to ensure the domain.com resolves to www.domain.com.

Not sure if you've already read this to get the skinny on 301's, but it might help shed some light - and offers a couple examples of the code to use, depending on your type of server and operating system. Furthermore, it offers a couple resources to look into to help find the code you might be able to use if it's not shown in the article. wink

You SAY that http//:domain.com/ doesn't exist, but in reality, it does - its the same as http://www.domain.com/ - so if one exists, the other exists. wink

Page not found, if returned with a 404 status code in the HTTP header, means that the page really does not exist.

You did have duplicate content, and now all of those non-www URLs will be shown as Supplemental Results in the SERPs for one year. The www pages will show as normal listings as before.

It is far better to have a 301 redirect from non-www to www so that people seeing those non-www results can still get to your site, rather than serve them all a 404 error and they then assume that your whole site is gone.

Thank you. I will solve it with a 301 redirect.
When I will put the 301 redirect will I get 0 results from
    site:domain.com -inurl:www
    ??

    (after some months of course)

The advice was right if both www and non-www exist, and both serve content. smile

Hello, I have the same problem.
My clues, for my website, are:
    52 results when I search for site:miositino.com
    15 results when I search for site:miositino.com -inurl:www
    52 results when I search for site:www.miositino.com

    BUT:
    nslookup miositino.com
    Can't find miositino.com: No answer
So, it is only possible to resolve www.miositino.com and it isn't possible to resolve miositino.com
    AND:
apache has no ServerName miositino.com, but only a ServerName www.miositino.com

Did I have duplicate content? How was possible?
Should I configure Apache with 301 redirect to remove duplicate?

Do any non-www URLs appear anywhere in the 3 searches you made?

If yes, then you need the redirect.

Note that as of a few months ago, a site:domain.com -inurl:www search will now show both non-www results (as expected) as well as "historical supplemental" results with www in the URL.
