Is it worth buying some links to prop up some pages on our site. Can G detect it?

If your site has good quality content, other people will link to your site. I would recommend against buying links.

Google is getting very good at detecting paid links.

    It normally ends in tears.

If you buy links, do so for traffic, not SEO - bottom line.

G discounts anything it even thinks smells of being bought.

We buy links all the time - for traffic. I do not specificy what anchor text should be used in these links, as frankly, I'm not chasing anything rankings-wise with them.

Buy links for traffic, not rankings...I may have mentioned that already... wink

buying some links to prop up some pages

You mean, advertising? Advertise to get traffic to your site on sites that would bring potential buyers to your site.

You should advertise on sites that are relevent to your site's topic because that's where you're going to get the best ROI for your money.

If you're just going to buy a link because you think it might have some ranking benefit then I wouldn't do it.

Don't involve in buying links. Rather than that create a site with good content, and submit it to good directories. It will definitely help you.

If a paid link can send you a ton of traffic then go for it.

If the link is for PageRank, then you have the wrong strategy. Google is out to get you.

Do you think that would include if someone paid Yahoo their $299 in blood money?

Google actually recommends that you put your site in Yahoo's directory, along with Dmoz (free).

There is nothing wrong with buying links, but try and make sure that the links will drive traffic as well as helping with search engine rankings.

    Hi all,

Yes, i agree with g1smd, How can search engines know that we purchased the links? I heard that search engines did not have an idea regarding paid links.

    cheers

andhrastudent - it depends how the links are presented. If the links are in an area marked 'sponsors' or 'advertiers' they may be devalued.

And, if the link is only live for a month, and removed, G will have an indication that the site is selling links, so they may well discount every link from that site.

As for Yahoo, well, like so many things with Google, there's some gray area.

The $299 fee is actually for a review, not for inclusion, so technically you are not paying for a link - you're paying for a review of your site, which may be included in the directory.

I personally think that since yahoo's directory is so big and old, it's basically grandfathered at this point for issues like this. It's seen as a proper step in building your online business.

G's desire to discount links stems from the whole idea of selling links to pass along Page Rank values.

If your goal with links is to drive traffic, then you'r eon the right track. If the goal is to pay for links to try to make your site seem more relevant, well, perhaps you should review your content and fix the real problems, rather than putting band-aids on them...
