We've been having an internal debate on what to do about a content situation we're evaluating. Here's the scenario:
Our website represents a number of locations & has pages for each of them. Ie. Atlanta, Austin, Boston, etc. Back in 2003, we thought it would help us rank better for terms related to those locations if we put up pages targeting keywords for those locations on a different domain that we own, we called them 'Location Content Pages'. Of course, we linked those new pages to the existing pages. There was some groundwork done to get the new 'Location Content Pages' ranked in the SE's and the plan actually worked, not only do those pages get ranked and get their own traffic, they've been successful in helping improve the ranking of the pages they link to. We know these pages specifically have an impact because during a server move, tech forgot about them and they were down for a couple weeks, which resulted in the pages they link to, to drop in the SERPs. When we reinstated the pages, the SERP's of the pages they link to improved. The 'Location Content Pages' upon a recent check have 75% duplicate content. Yes, we used a template & just changed the city names, contact details, and directions. They could also be construed as some kind of cross-linking scheme.
We'd appreciate any comments, advice, suggestions, criticisms, further evidence.
Sincerely - Dave
