I use several bits of software to check search engine result poistions - IBP, acebit tanking toolbox and search master.

Recently I get no report results whatsoever from google, it's as if the site is not ranked for the search keyword phrase.

However when I search manually I can see the site.

Has google done something to stop these postion checker tools from working? Anyone else notice this?

Google, and most engines, hates these things with a passion. A couple of years ago they too action against domains using WebPosition's software - if your domain used it, and pinged Google for results, they dropped you way back in the SERPs.

They do not like anything automated asking their systems to run queries. It eats up system resources at their end, and if abused (like asking for reports several times a day for many phrases and many websites), they'll push back on the domain being searched for.

They do make an API key available, and if your software can use it, it's the way to go. if the software cannot use the API key Google will provide, dump the software - it's a disaster waiting to happen for you.

Honestly, though, checking rank positions isn't a really good way to get an idea of progress.

The best way is to watch your logs and see the volume of traffic being developed form the engines. That's true metrics - position checking is simply a way to make you, or someone else, feel good - doesn't mean you're getting any more traffic, just means you saw yourself in the list... wink

well my volume of traffioc is not rising so I would like to see if I am actually ranked at all for any of my keyphrases.

In what way can using this software possibly be a "disaster waiting to happen"?

The engines don't like automated systems running queries. It eats up resource son them. When they see a pattern that resembles a spider/robot consistently hitting them up to run queries, they can, and have in the past a couple of times, pushed the domain requesting the queries down in the rankings.

By and large this isn't an issue these days, as you can request an API from them, insert it in the tool and it'll self-limit the number of queries you can request in a 24 hour period.

It's only really an issue if you are asking it to run ranking position reports on hundreds of phrases several times each day.

Mostly, since I was around to see what happened to some of the WebPosition users back in the day, I shy away from all software apps now.

Plus, rank positioning isn't a real metric (IMO), so it's not something I track.

Inbound search traffic volumes by engine, however, that's a real metric and where I focus my efforts.
