I have recently taken over SEO strategy for my company. Over the past couple months I have made some changes to our site and met with some success. One of our most important keywords(a very competitive keyword) recently shot to number one on google. For about a week the keyword was trading between number 1 and 2 but it seems that it is now pretty stable at number 1. Recently our listing just dropped off completely, only to come back two days later. This has happened twice in the past month. Both times it came right back to number 1 position.
Any thoughts?

Google servers results from different database centers at different times for different reasons, so rather than sweat this on a daily or weekly time frame, watch the positioning over a month or more.
...and more important than the actual ranking, watch your analytics to help understand where the actual traffic is coming from.
