Here is the problem. During the 14 years I have spent with Internet marketing, e-commerce, content and SEO, I have enjoyed a good deal of success with rankings. But two months ago I accepted a Marketing position for a manufacturing company that includes SEO responsibilities. The site is ((URL REMOVED)).
I left out the full URL because I believe the forum forbids the posting of URLs; also, this exact URL is not in my profile. The site is about 8 months old. When I arrived here, I was told about some issues that I know were hurting rankings - duplicate content among other sites the company owns, a general lack of optimization, hidden text within the factory "windows" on the home page, no quality inbound linkage, etc.
I am gradually getting some of these issues resolved. I have spent a lot of time writing quality, keyword-rich articles for other sites that will link to us, performing general code optimization and more. There is some slight improvement, especially with link popularity, coming up in MSN and Yahoo, but Google has been largely static.
Of course, my boss has seized on this and asks me when the situation with Google will improve for us. He feels our domain name, ((URL REMOVED)) should help to bring us up, plus we definitely are one of the leading manufacturers in our industry.
Our factory has a lot of productivity. I have told my boss that organic results require a lot of work and time, but the longer it takes to get results from Google, the more frustrating this issue is. And, of course, not getting into dmoz is a problem, too. Any thoughts or comments here? Thanks.

It can be rather frustrating. What type of sites are linking to you? Do they share your site's general topic? Or are those site off-topic?
not getting into dmoz is a problem
I wouldn't necessarily call it a problem--there are plenty of sites out there doing very well that aren't in DMOZ.org.

I joined LinkMarket and have beeen adding mostly "non industry" links to our "resources and links" page. We have a PR of 3, so I only post links that have at least a PR3. Our biggest competitor has a huge links section and most of the links appearing on their site are also from outside of the industry. Their site has been "live" for about 7 years, is listed in dmoz and has very high Google ranking under our most popular keywords.

Please don't get into link exchanges unless they are absolutley pertinent.
Cleaning up all of the reciprical linking will be the best use of your time.
Google frowns upon recipricol lining - remove them all from your site unless they are absolutely pertinent.

My two cents is make it a big goal of yours to get into DMOZ. I think that alone will help your rankings in google tremendously. I am far from an expert like others here so take what I say with a healthy dose of salt.

hey Omegaman, don't worry about DMOZ at all, it nearly collapsed not too long ago and is extremely hard to into (unless you bribe the editors but thats a different story).
If your after directory links, aim for dir.yahoo.com and www.botw.org. Both paid, both quick and both good!

As dudibob says, DMOZ is a dead horse. Their importance for contributing to searches and rankings -- along with the huge drop in active participation they've experienced with their carefully selected editors -- has rendered them utterly useless and benign. They are no longer an important 'reference' directory for any of the major engines who - by now - have more historic web site data than DMOZ could collect in twenty years anyway.
And yeah, the search-promoting-link-farming sites have the same effect as if you hired somebody to stick a hot poker into your eyeball everyday for the next six months.

I would concentrate on continuing to improve the website and make it the best resource it can be for visitors. Clean up the links - get rid of anything that is not placed there for the benefit of your visitors.
Don't worry so much about competitors and the search engines. If the company requires visibility in Google - take out an ad words campaign as a temporary measure.
The site is only 8 months old and has had a rocky beginning - it is going to take time to get good results in Google. You and your boss need to relax about this.
