Hey Guys.
I'm slightly confused about how people find your ads on the content network? Do they type in keywords at somepoint or is it keywords of yours that are inlcluded in the site?
Also what format do the adverts appear in? Are they like the the ones on google down the right side of the page or the longer ones? I wouldnt mind knowing how my ads are appearing so i can make adjustments if they look stupid.
Cheers

Hey new_b! Welcome to SEF!
Just to clarify the question, are you referring to a contextual ad system like Google's Adsense system, or are you referring to ads placed alongside search results like the Adwords system?
...and, since you're new to posting up here, here's a quick link to a post with some useful info for you.

Thankyou, ill have a good look.
Just to clarify I was talking about the content network in the campaign settings. I understand the search network where people find you by typing in keywords, but is the content network as simple as Google just placing you're advert on what sites it thinks are relevant?
Also it there a set format is how these adverts are displayed? Are there any basic rules to displaying your advert on the content network i.e. always have full stops after line 1 otherwise it seems like one big sentance?

OK - I think I get what you're referencing now.
The content network side of things is basically the Google Adsense system. So, if you enable this, the ads show across websites running Adsense ads. The entire system crawls to determine relevancy so the right ads are shown next to matching content.
Now, the ads themselves are simple text based ads (they look very similar to the Adwords ads shown next to search results, though site owners can customize colors and sizes). As an advertiser, you can also opt to run image-based ads through the network. As long as the sizes match, the ads will show.
Now, there's almost nothing YOU can do to influence how YOUR ads will look when shown on the content network side of things. The look, and feel is controlled by the webmaster for their own reasons (blend with the site, stand out form the site, etc.).
The upside to being in the content network is much broader exposure of your ad - and since it's CPC, you'll still only be paying for what clicks are developed. Ads shown on the content network appear on the thousands of websites that have joined the Adsense program, so I'll wish you the best of luck in finding your ad out there. I'm sure if you went to the right site and refreshed the pages, you might see your ad, but remember - thousands of sites, and hundreds of other advertisers, so I'd consider it a minor miracle if you actually saw your own ad.
The downside is that the CTR can fall dramatically, clicks could increase dramatically driving up costs (good problem to have, though), and you still need to make sure YOUR site is fine tuned to make sure it converts or you'll be spending money to drive traffic and NOT seeing the return on sales.
I personally run all my ads through the content network. Study after study shows that Adword ads next to search results, while effective, are not viewed or actioned as often as the results in the organic ares of the page.
Plus, a relevant ad next to relevant content is much more likely to get clicked by a relevant user, so why skip the option?

Thanks!!
I've got tracking set up and separated my search and network campaigns so i'll soon see whats working for me. As far as content network goes getting so many impressions with a low CTR isn't so bad, where else can you display an ad for free!
