We're new in web business we would like to know if there is any way for us to know if any of the search engines (especially GOOGLE) penalized our site. We're just learning "ethical" ways of web advertising at the moment. We do not know if in the past we may have done something (unethical) that is not acceptable to any search engines and we would like to know where do we rank with any of these search engines.

    Thanks very much!

can't tell what you have done in the passed, just your current issues

    I suggest
get rid of almost all of your keywords, use 6 or 7 tops. Keyword tag is generally ignored and you are way over the top for too many in the tag

    add a robots.txt

add a sitemap, submit to google

have separate titles and metas for each and every page, no repeats

remove you link exchange, reciprocal linking in the form of link pages(e.g. farms) are out and you can be penalized. Have other sites reference your site in their content and you do the same..

I really really really apreciate your response MJ.

    We'll do what you suggested.

I'll discuss those things with our web designer as well.

    Thanks again

How old is your website? You might also post specific things you did in the past that you are not sure were ethical and others can let you know if you did anything that might have gotten you in trouble.

    HI Isabelleseo,

The site is 1 year old but it's actually 10 months in operation. When we were starting, we have gone to some online classified websites and invited those people to post their bikes on sale in our website. I think we might have p****d off some websites owners (we are really sorry, it's just that the site started as a hobby and we just thought that nobody know's the site so we tried to advertise it).

We stopped doing it for two months already. We just noticed a big drop of registered users. I am so tempted to go to different sites again and do the same, but as I was doing some research, I think, I should really stop before our website suffer the repercussion.

I came accross SEO, but getting an expert is so expensive, so we're doing our own SEO research to help the site get known (i guess that's the ethical way to do it smile

    grace
