Hi all,
We are building a new site and I was wondering if the alt attribute carries any weight these days?
Also, when name URLs is it better to use:
a) word1_word2.htm (underscore)
b) word1-word2.htm (dash)
c) word1word2.htm (nothing at all)
Thanks in advance.

This one of the three:
b) word1-word2.htm (dash) That said, I'd stick to only one keyword in the name of the file there, but that's just my choice and what's worked for me in the past.
You can also use the dot ( . ) as a word spacer.
Alt info is very important, IMO. It's important usability, and it also help images rank well, which can be a source of traffic for you that takes little effort to chase down.
Only put tags on selected images - your logo, images in an article, product shots, etc. Don't bother putting tags on the 32 (or however many) images that make up the header background or footer, for example.

The alt attribute has minor importance, but it can be used as a detector of spammy sites if you stuff it up.
Always avoid underscores and spaces in URLs. Use hyphens or dots instead.

I'm curious what Google considers spamming with alt text attribute? With our site, we tried to add relevant content to the alt text, but now I'm wondering if we are getting penalized for 'stuffing', even though the descriptions are legitimate descriptions.

Three to eight words is all you need in there, as a guess.
Any more is wasting your time.

g1smd -
Thanks.
We will see about either shortening our alt text or at least reducing the alt text on new images.

If it really needs more, then it really needs more.
Try to keep it brief and to the point without spoiling accuracy.

I can think of two reasons off the top of my head.
- Some browsers (like Netscape) don't handle spaces in file names well and will give you a 404.
- Underscores do not show well in urls, causing people to perhaps put in a space instead of the underscore and thus not hitting the target page if they type them in manually.

Yep.
Underscores simply "disappear" in underlined links, and an underscored combination is treated as being one_word, not as two separate words as you might have expected.
Spaces are turned into %20 and that makes the%20URL%20very%20hard%20to%20read as well as giving problems to some search engines and browsers.
