Hi. I have 3 sites - and would like to link each to the other 2. Will Google still penalise me for this? Surely this sort of 3-way linking must happen by chance all the time on the net - with sites link to each other?

One of my customers has 9 website with excellent Google rankings - all linked together; they have been for years (some 6 years) with no probs.

You might get away with it for a while or even for a long time, but Google is always on the look out for interlinked sites.

I'd recommend this article, as there is a pretty comprehensive treatment of the topic:

As the article suggests; you shouldn't write off reciprocal links as all bad - it's down to the context and overall percentage of all the inbound links.

    just to clarify
inbound and reciprocal links are two different things

inbound -- one way in coming from another site, they need to be contextually relevant to the landing page of your site. Don't have them all landing on your home page, inner pages are just as important

reciprocal -- two way linking, one from my page links to your page and you link back to my page. most often posted on a link page, and many times are not relevant. these are being devalued by google and others as link farms. this is the type of linking that you should be very weary of using.
