Hello i was wondering if anyone could help. We set up a 301redirect with a site that we took over. They had a good page rank and also a lot of backlinks. it has been about 2 months from the take over and we have not gained any backlink. I will have to wait to see the pagerank change. Has everyone been lying when they say that it all transfrers over. Thanks in advance

Hi sparks.

Sadly, there's a LOT of depth on that topic that you may be missing.

Like, for example, is the domain you have 301'd to your current site related to the same topic?

Taking a domain from a successful site about sewing and 301-ing it to a site about cars will not result in the success most hope for.

Also, you need to be aware that this transfer of "goodness" everyone wants to see happen is NOT pre-ordained. It's not an automatic thing - it's at the discretion of the engines.

In many cases, they know exactly what folks are trying to do when they 301 a domain to another.

IMO, the true use of the 301 when used on a domain is to cover things like:

1 - dupe content issues - you 301 the domain.com version of the domain to the www.domain.com version
2 - personal sites - I own my name as a domain, and it 301s to my personal/business website - so if anyone searches for me by name, the domain ranks and forwards them to my actual site
3 - it's actual use - when you move content from one place on a domain to another, you set up a 301 to help people and spiders find the moved content easily - when moving from www.domain.com/folder/file.html to www.domain.com/file.html, you'd 301 the old location to the new one

So, let us know if the domain your are FORWARDING is a domain on the same topic as the site it is directed to - that's step one.

...and how are you watching your backlinks as well - Google doesn't show all of the links it knows about in a simple links: search.

All we have done is taken over a competitor who went into adminstration so the we in effect have 301 to a new site. They sold the same products as us so there is no differeance between the two sites in reguards to content.

If the paths and files on the new site are the same as the paths and files on the old site, then you may get some advantage.

If the structrue of both sites is completely different, then I believe you will get little to no benefit from doing this.
