I have read many threads here that touch on articles being posted on sites. But still would like to learn some specifics about this.
    Here are my questions.

If I have a web site about a specific subject ( say women's health in general ) is it OK to post articles regarding women's health issues, insurance, etc etc. from other writers? Of course giving them their requested credits and a link back to their site - within the article?

These articles I am questing of posting on my web site, I assume will also be posted in other web sites - how does this effect my web site?

Also if these same writers chose ( not required ) to post a link on their site back to my sites main index page, how does that effect my site?

I guess I am concerned of looking like a link farm to google. My web site ( in the making ) will have about 20+ new articles a month posted.

    Much Appreciated,
    Beth smile

it is OK to post articles writen by others on your website, and it is also OK to give them a credit with a link for their work

if you look at how sites like mediapost and smallbusinessbrief do it you will see a newspaper style credit

usually a byline and then at the end

this person is the CEO of wonderful company and is the formost authority on green widgets, visit his site www dot here-whatever dot com

    that is tastful and fine

content sharing is what its all about today and giving credit is fine.

what you want to do is get YOUR articles published on other sites and a credit with a link back to your site in it and no reciprical.

if your hosting articles with an expectation of a reciprical link back for doing it, it is still a link farm and reciprical linking and the google monster does not like it.

your trying to fine a loophole for justifying reciprical linking and your model is not it.

search engines like content, the more relevent the content is the better you will rank and the better your will meet the needs of your site visitors. this can help MORE than a reciprical link.

so...post their content with a link to the writers site, do not get one in return.

    content is king, not links.

Thanks mj - no I am not looking for a "loop hole" of any kind ! However I am trying to be sure I stay within the SE guidelines, Hence the reason for my questions.

The links back to me are not even requested - however many sites ( writers ) have shown an interest, which again is why I am trying to sure about this.

I am not a writer - I am becoming a publisher/editor of web sites for women's issues and such - so my writing articles is not happening, nor will it lol wink

My sites will have great content, and will included the correct form of bi lines etc for the writers.

I just do not want to appear to be a link farm and want to tread this ground carefully.

ALSO - I am a tad concerned about the fact that the articles that will be on my site very well may be on other sites - will this get me in hot water with the SE ?

the dupe will not get you in hot water wit the SE's, the problem is that the SE may attribute the original to the wrong site, thus it helps the ranking of not the originator, but the copy

There are problems sometimes with figuring out who is the Original Owner of the content.

    Advice above is good.

    Hi evryone,
I've been away for a long time due to my job and I'm glad now I have the time to read all of these intersting posts...

Thank you beth_lk for bringing up this issue.
I have a website that links to the original articles/authors on their websites, but since my site has a lot of relevant content some of these websites link back to me. My question is how bad this could be for my site?

    Thank you all.

has anyone taken a look at how digg handles articles (i'm not promoting digg)

if you post the whole article you may not only have dupe issues but also copywrite enfringement issues.

post the article title, author, source of the article, an intro descript and then a link to the article on the originators site and many issues go away.

    Hi

What mj said is very true.....you simply cannot post the whole article without giving the due credit ....you should mention the origin of the article. If it has been written by you then you don’t have to worry about the ethical issues however when you are indulging in the acts mentioned above then you should provide the source and the origin. This way you are ethical and also very resourceful...

There's no link farm issue to worry about, so long as the reciprocal links are with 'related' sites, and those sites are OK.

Linking with article sources is no different to any other links - you need to check the sites you are linking to, and use nofollow (or do not link) if you cannot trust them.

If the articles are duplicated all over, then the copy on your site may do you no favours, and may not be indexed. But that will not 'hurt' you site in any way; just one page not being indexed.

Personally, I'd steer clear of articles that are being posted all over, simply because one more copy does no-one any favours, and being 'unfussy' in what you publish makes your site just one more publisher - rather than a unique resource. But that's just my view wink
