    Hi all,

I have just started to optimise my new site for search engines, and need some advise on the search phrases. The site sells backing tracks for guitar players.

If, in the keyword tag, I use phrases like:

    - guitarist backing tracks
    - rock backing tracks
    - blues backing tracks
    - 60's guitarist backing tracks
    - lead guitarist backing tracks

    etc. etc.

Do search engines see this as all "... backing tracks" keywords and
therefore see it as spamming on the "backing tracks", or is it ok to use
phrases like that, as they are seen as different phrases?

the site is listed in my profile, and the results are as folows for the moment. For the search term "Guitarist Backing Tracks"

    Google = #17 Yahoo = #2 MSN = non existent Altavista = #3

Thanks for any advice in advance.

    Peter

The title tag and the meta description are very important.

Each page must have a unique entry that descibes only the content that can be found on that page.

The keywords meta tag is used only by Yahoo these days, and I would spend little or no time on it.

If you do use it, then keep it to less than 25 words that summarise what is on just that page.

Hey Peter - first off, welcome to the forums! smile

Next up - best to keep the domain listed in your profile and refrain from dropping the URL in posts. wink You can edit it out yourself, or a mod will likely clean it out at some point, but that's how things flow here at SEF, just so you know. wink

Now, my advice or folks on keywords is simple:

Use a tool like wordtracker or, better yet, keyworddiscovery to get a feel for what users are actually searching on.

Here's are three examples for you based on your list above(number is the # of searches on a phrase in the past year):

    - guitarist backing tracks - 0 (not a single search)
    - rock backing tracks - 20 (but see below)
    - blues backing tracks - 167 (see below)
    - 60's guitarist backing tracks - 0
    - lead guitarist backing tracks - 0

Here's what I found using keyworddiscovery and the phrase backing tracks as a base to start from:

    free backing tracks 1,224
    guitar backing tracks 678
    free guitar backing tracks 310
    midi backing tracks 229
    download backing tracks 180
    blues backing tracks 163
    backing tracks for free 142
    free midi backing tracks 138
    paul anka backing tracks 122
    mp3 backing tracks 106
    karaoke backing tracks 101
    download free backing tracks 89
    backing tracks free 81
    backing tracks for guitar 76
    stand alone backing tracks 75
    professional backing tracks 74
    backing tracks for oliver 66
    free downloadable backing tracks 60
    music backing tracks 57

Using rock backing tracks as a starting point for some keyword research, I found this:

    backing tracks 3,351
    rock backing tracks 20
    rock guitar backing tracks 15
    backing tracks rock music 13
guitar backing tracks hard rock 9
    free rock backing tracks 8
we will rock you backing tracks 4
    rock swings backing tracks 4
download backing tracks we will rock you the musical 4
    backing tracks rock roll 3
free rock backing tracks for guitar 3
    kid rock backing tracks 3
backing tracks rock and roll 3
paul anka rock swing backing tracks 3
free rock backing tracks for guitar downloads 2
rock and roll backing tracks 2
backing tracks we will rock you 1
backing tracks we will rock you the musical 1
free we will rock you backing tracks 1
    rock chicks backing tracks 1
backing tracks for rock guitar 1

    Based on blues backing tracks:

    blues backing tracks 163
    free blues backing tracks 37
backing tracks blues loop cd 8
    blues backing tracks free 8
    backing blues tracks 7
blues backing tracks wave files 6
    wave blues backing tracks 6
    backing tracks blues 6
blues or metal backing tracks 6
    blues backing jam tracks 5
gospel blues karaoke backing tracks 5
    backing tracks guitar blues 5
backing tracks sanfransisco bay blues 4
blues backing tracks in f 4
    slow blues backing tracks 4
mp3 blues guitar backing tracks 4
    backing tracks blues cd 4
backing tracks slow blues in f 4
smooth jazz blues backing jam tracks cd 3
    blues backing tracks torrent 3

Now, that data above is only a sample - I only took the report to the first 20 results, but you can see the value in the data the tools provide. A couple of the phrases you were thinking of were solid, others, less so. Those lists above, though, are the real deal.

You can also see how a three word phrase like rock backing tracks can also yield rock tracks and backing tracks.

Next up, will the engines think you're spamming by repeating portions of phrases over and over.

They may. Keyword stuffing is an old spammer trick and the engines are well aware of it - mostly, they just ignore it, provided the site, overall, tends to be built as an actual resource for users, as opposed to just a quick-hit content junkpile designed to show ads.

My practice is to NOT repeat the phrases over, but I also advocate only targeting one phrase for each page of content. If the page is about rock backing tracks, then that is the only phrase that I focus on - in the meta tags, the content, the alt attributes for images, etc.

So, if you want to chase another phrase, create another page of targeted content.

Hope this helps. I normally don't go into quite so much detail in answering, but I had the time this morning. wink

Most serious engines get the keywords straight from your visible text copy meaning that your content provides the keywords matched up with search queries.

Keywords meta tag might be used by tiny engines, but you'll rarely see traffic from those sources.

I always advocate taking the time to fill in the meta keyword tag properly. Most engines may not use it, but it shows attention to detail and an investment of effort to not skip things.

Plus, it takes seconds to fill in, and who know what the future may bring. The meta description tag was "ignored" for a long time by many, and now it's making a comeback it would seem. smile

To be clear, this is simply my personal preference when working with the tags.

Sportsguy, I was thinking the same thing as I read this thread.
One day "it" is one way and the next day another, so best to cover your "bases" wink

PS: did you get those search results from the 2 sources you posted here? I have looked at both and considered buying, but was not sure.... seeing these results is amazing to me !

I used keyword discovery for those results. WT is considerably cheaper, but doesn't pull from the same length of time, so the data is a bit limited, IMO - still, both are useful resources.

The key phrases seem to be Ok! But one thing which i guess is missing over here, is vertical search element or "Localised Search". I think you can gain more result oriented traffic if you can re write your key phrases again by keeping it more niche.
