Google explains which meta tags you need on the pages of your site and which ones they use.
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/12/answering-more-popular-picks-meta-tags.html
You need these as a bare minimum on every site:
- meta charset
- title tag
- meta description
You might also need general stuff for robots or for Googlebot in particular, as well as things for their webmastertools features.

Excellent find G1! Nice work - folks should read this post.
I like to add in the keywords tag and make sure the doctype is the first thing in the code, too, but this info is handy for sure.

Google says they don't use the meta keywords tag. I stopped using it several years ago as a site-wide feature. I occasionally use it one a few select pages, but that might only be on half a dozen pages on the entire site.

I still use it simply to complete everything that's traditionally there - other engines might still use it, and with how things change over time, who knows when it'll become useful again.
I'm careful to not stuff the tag and most of my desire to use it is to avoid needing to go back later and update things if that tag comes back in fashion...
Witness the description tag - two years ago it was not used by anyone, today, it's being recognized again.
