What are Directories and what do they do exactly? I have just recently taken on the job of seoptimizing my company's 7 year old rental site. I dont know what directories, if any, it has been submitted too. Is there a way to find out what directories its been submitted to.
I think Directories help people link to you or something. Do you have to submit to Dmoz to be searchable for google? Im confused could someone please unconfuse me, it would be greatly appreciated

There are only a few broad-subject directories that are worth being listed in these days: dmoz.org and yahoo and a couple of others.
There will be half a dozen industry-specific and local-area directories that may also apply. Avoid submitting to long lists of directories.

If you search for the ["full name of the site"] and, if different, ["the name of the business"] in Google, you'll find most of the directory entries in quality directory; the banned and useless ones may not show, but that probably does not matter.
Directory entries in Quality directories can help users of such directories to find the site. They may also help with your search engine placement (but may not help much, and many will not help at all).
In general, submitting to local and themed / topical directories is more likely to get referrals, but that varies with niche.
Submitting to poor quality directories is at best a waste of time, and can actually damage your site's Google ranking, particularly if you ever link out to directories (TIP: Don't Ever Link Out To Directories!).
If you find a handful of quality free directories that will accept the site, you may not need to pay; submitting to more than a few directories rapidly reaches the point of diminishing returns, and referrals are rare from most.
If the site meets the ODP's (dmoz) guidelines, then it is worth submitting - but not worth worrying; as with every directory, submit and move on, they will list you or not; their choice, not yours, therefore not EVER worth sweating over.
