I own a company in the US. I currently run an ecommerce site with a .com domain extension. I recently acquired the co.uk extension of the same base domain name. I would like to convert my current site to a format that is better geared towards European sales, for example including the prices in Sterling rather than dollars. Will I get penalized for duplicate content if I run two nearly identical sites, with one geared towards the UK market? I would like to use the co.uk extension to broaden our reach and appeal in the UK.

Matt Cutts says that it should be OK, but there is a usability issue here.

You will need a simple way for people to get to the right site should they get delivered to the wrong site from the SERPs.
