Would google penalize me for paying for links via the following site:
www.real.estategateway.com/submit.html

It seems so enticing!...

search for [paidlinks] and you should get a fair number of 'official' announcements that Google deprecates paidlinks.

And they reserve the right not to index sites using deprecated behaviour.

You are free to pay for links, if that's what you want. And Google are equally free *not* to index your sites. Your choice wink

Directory listings are acceptable if they are in trusted directories.

Yahoo!

Make sure you get a listing on DMOZ.org to.

Thanks...yes, I did DMOZ.
The site that shows the paid directories is:
www.paiddirectorylist.com/

Are these trusted? (for example, the PR6 & PR7 ones)?

I am still waiting for my competetors abusing paid links to be punished or removed now for 5 months even after I filed official complaints. They are still flourishing. Luckily I am competing in top 5 without it but I would be #1 for all without the abusers in there

The way to look at it is "Are these directories providing a service for the money?" - is there careful categorisation of entries? Is there evidence that entries are edited in a coherent and consistent style?

Or are they really just provided a classified ad listing for my site (ie a paidlink)?

It's NOT about PR - it's about Quality. Some directories have it; most do not.
