So I was on my daily routine checking out rankings on google for our keywords and decided to check out this one website for the keyword "print design" on google.ca. This site is ranked first out of millions.
When I get to the site, their index page has nothing but images! No content whatsoever. I then check the source code to see if there is anything weird, but came to show nothing but regular coding. They don't even have meta tags either (not saying that its a HUGE factor, but it does help). I also saw that the images don't have any optimized alt tags (which you think they would do since the only thing they have are images).
I then go and check their backlinks on google and nothing special either, relevant backlinks just like what any other website would do and a lot of them we have backlinks from as well.
I am just surprised on how they are getting this rank when I see many other sites that are optimized and this one is hardly done so.
www.adfactor.com is the website and was wondering if you guys have any input on this?

it could be a bait and switch, but i doubt it.
the only text they have is print design. That gives them a 100% keyword to text ratio.
make a page just like it and see if you come in second.

Weird.
First it was a link.
Then it was a nofollow link.
Now it's a link.

i'm speechless too... what input? you didnt get any.
The home page CAN be the page returned on google, even if the ACTUAL page which matched the query is somewhere else on the site. This site could have other pages indexed which better match the term.
Also, given that every title tag contains 'Print Design' for all pages, the theme of the site is evident. You do not also yet know how many IBL's pointing to this page, or where they come from with relevant targeted terms.
Of course, text or content empty pages CAN be thrown up very hgh in google for relatively competetive terms just from a meta title, even without any onsite or offsite optimising. Its odd, and a PITA as it throws all sorts of questions up.
I'm not saying any of these are why its got where it is (which incidentally isnt a major feat, seeing as 'print design' as a complete phrase isnt a popular term), but you have to look at the bigger picture.

They are in ODP. That always is a plus.
But look at their competition listed below them. They have better focus on that one key phrase than their competition.
