but there's no substitute for a proper site of your own.

i think the closest you can get to a real website is a blog or a free forums. And also, look up in wiki or google about SEO or search engine optimization to find a detailed article about how to get your page into the top rank (and as a consequence, increase traffic).

There is no one specific answer to most of your questions.
However if you use the search feature here, I am sure you can find all the answers. I was a "green horn" when I joined here and 98% of what I now know I learnt from this site.
As to your free web site question. It is not a good idea as far as getting better ranks/indexing to go with a free site.
Now days though there are many great hosts that don't charge you a arm & leg. Where I host at packages for business sites start at 9.95 a month. The more you want ( features and such ) the more you usually have to pay.
Just chose your host very carefully.
Many of us here can tell you nightmare stories about terrible hosts 
As I said earlier there is no one set answer. However if this is something you really want to do, it is well worth your time to pull up a chair and start reading here.
