When my listing shows in Google, it shows text that is not in my site (i just did a scan of my site). I think the text is from a long time ago.
One point about my site is that there is a redirect from the main directory to a sub directory for the initial page. So there is no text on the 'initial' page, but the initial page that you see is a pretty normal page.
The site has been scanned on June 18, 2008, so it gets scanned. We also have a Google site map.
Help!

That's the behaviour when the URL is tagged as a Supplemental Result.
There isn't a lot you can do about it. However, I don't like the sound of your redirect; especially if the redirect is anything other than a 301 redirect.

the search engines look for your index (or default) page to be in the top tier root directory. That is where all of your power is. Redirecting to a sub directory and bypassing the root is compromising your rankings.

Check dmoz.org for your website. 99% likely that the description that you're seeing in google is matching your dmoz entry description. That text is probably coming directly from dmoz.org or similar.
Sometimes if your pages suck for some reason (like you having no index page in the root and using the redirects) then the description which appears in google will sometimes come from elsewhere, normally dmoz.
Sort your site out and get rid of the redirects and just put your site in the web root.

Thank you for all the great feedback. So I'll work on getting our main page back in the root directory.
But I have a question. Does dmoz.org get updated ever? Can I resubmit to that directory? If I clean up our site will that correct dmoz.org as well.

The open directory does get updated - but only when it needs to be, and not in a hurry then.
You can suggest updates to your entry, but they will not necessarily be used - their criteria are rather different to a site owner's, usually.
Cleaning up your site will not affect your ODP entry.

rather than worrying about changing your dmoz entry, worry about your website. If you do the website properly then the dmoz description will no longer be used as a description for your site.
The dmoz entry is a fallback when google cant find any info about your site from the site itself.

So I updated my site and put my homepage (and all my other initial pages)in the root directory. Google reindexed my site, but STILL hasn't changed the text in the listing.
So any suggestions on what I do now?

If that text is coming from your ODP description then you need to add the noodp attribute to the root index page of the site.

After you web listing in dmoz
latter you web will be show in google list
but it'll be about 2 mounth latter.
