I have seen the following sentence
"The introduction of the nofollow attribute by Google to combat spamdexing has the side effect that webmasters also use it on every outgoing link to increase own PageRank"
on this page
[link]

My question is, this sentence seems to build a relation between the link a page contain, and the pagerank of a page. It seems to say that the less link a page contain, the higher PageRank it has; but the PageRank is calculate using the link from other pages to the current pages, regardless of the link that a page contain.

Thus, can anybody suggest what that sentence means, so that the contradiction of my understanding gone?

It's a misleading statement arising from a misunderstanding of various discussions on Google patents.

In the 'real world', the only way to significantly affect your Google page rank is to get more or better incoming links.

Page rank is a measure of link popularity; the visible sign (the green bar) is at least three months out of date, and page rank is only one of many determinants of page ranking, which determines where your page is found in Google searches.

Any perceived advantage of having no outgoing links is dwarfed by the real advantage of linking to relevant quality sites.

To summarise: It's an academic issue, best left in Wikipedia.

what they're essentially on about is 'leaking' pagerank, and therfore diluting your own. Every time you give a site a link a little of your own pagerank is given to them, instead of being retained on your site.

Its fine in theory but not practical and there are now too many other factors involved, especially considering that good outgoing links are now being counted towards you, as it keeps the flow going, which google likes smile
