Hello Everyone,
I am new here just joined. I am also a complete dummy with Website SEO. I am designing my website at the moment and would like to optimize it for the top ten search engines if possible. Could anyone give me any tips or links to kick start me.
Any reply would be much appreciated.
many thanks in advance
regards
helen

There aren't really ten search engines. Almost all of your traffic will come from Google.
There are hundreds of things to be doing...
Make sure your content includes words (that will be indexed) that are the words that searchers actually type in to search engines.
Make sure every page has a title and meta description that describes just what that page is about.
Make sure that every page of your site links back to "/" or to "www.domain.com/"; that is do NOT link to "/index.html".
Look at what breadcrumb navigation is all about and have some of that on your site.
Get all your stylesheet and JavaScript information out into external files.
Sign up for Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics as the data in there is invaluable.
Run your site through Xenu LinkSleuth to find errors in your internal linking.
Read through old topics in the forum to pick up more; or maybe other people will suggest some.

Also make sure the sites subject is one you know well.
Add new content to it regularly.
When your ready ask for a site review here in the site review forum.
Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Read, read and read some more of the older posts here - I found them very helpful as a greenhorn
PS: also plan to spend time here often. This forum will teach you more in a few months then you thought you needed to know. Keep coming back and reading other peoples questions and the responses they get.
