I've travelled before with a laptop and ran my web business, but I want to be a little more prepared this time:

    1. Someone suggested using either ssh or a VPN end to end
from my laptop to my host, as an aid to security as I use wi-fi from numerous coffee shops round the world. I've no idea how to set something like this up. Can anyone help?

    2. I'd like to use my mail reader instead of my web based account for email, but what could I use as the outgoing mail server? No problem at home, I use my ISP. But travelling I'm not signed up with any ISP and mostly use free wi-fi connections. Are there services specially for this? I only need use of an outgoing mail server for my personal email.

I too travel with laptop, a lot. Sending outgoing messages is the only problem. Instead of downloading my messages, I log onto my ISP's web based email, read and answer, and save the copies of replies. Then download all when I'm back to my own ISP. Not real convenient, but better than staying home.

I do that too. You kind of get used to it. When I first got on the net I found I could use free mail servers to send email. I doubt any exist any more.

You should be able to send your emails using your own SMTP server (usually named smtp.yourdomain.com or mail.yourdomain.com) from anywhere. You just need to set your email client to login when sending emails. For example in Outlook-Express: Tools/Accounts/Mail/Properties/Servers/My Server Requires Authentication
If this does not work, ask your webmaster to enable it on the mail server. ;-)

Regarding SSH or VPN use, i would think that it is not necessary to go that far. I believe that most of what you do is web-based. Therefore, just enabling the use of SSL on your site should be more than enough security (it is enough for banking on the web...). That is, you will just have to add an S to http when you enter your manager's page url address. For example:
    https://www.yourdomain.com/manage.html
Try it, SSL might already be enabled! If not, ask your webmaster. It is just a snap... Good luck!

I also use my laptop to run my business on the move, from all over the world. Best advice I can give:

    1) Subscribe as many connexions as you can, When one does not work, another one might do the job. I use GPRS (on my cellular GSM phone), WiFi and landline. For landline, I have several possibilities: CompuServe, Ipass, TollFreeIsp, etc.

    2) As all the others, I had problems with SMTP and the like. I use Outlook Express. My problems were solved when I decided to subscribe to Mailsnare premium email service (it is the Rolls-Royce of email services I think); I also have Runbox as a backup service. See the forum of emailaddresses.com if you want more advice on email.
