    Hi,

From messages I've read in some of the other forums, a well structured HTML document will work quite well with the search engines i.e using <H1>, <P> tags etc.

Using structured HTML (as it was intended) leaves little room for layout or design, so my question is this.

Do search engines rank standard HTML pages better than pages contained wholly inside a table, or do they ignore the outer most table and drill straight into the content, such as the H1 and P tags?

    Thanks in advance.

Well, generally frames are on the bottom of the scale, then comes standard HTML pages (with the tables), after that HTML with CSS. Tables make it little tougher to optimize properly which is why some people prefer the CSS for positioning & layout. Spiders read from top to bottom in a document, so whatever comes first in your particular page is read first. If by using tables that means that your navigation bar is ahead of your content then yes, those pages that have content ahead of their navigation bar are probably going to fare a little better. They still read the <table> tags though. Does that help? smile

    Cheers Sinoed,

Yeah, that helps. I always thought standard HTML was the ideal way of coding a site, but I'll now start looking more at CSS to enhance the pages.

It does? That's news to me.

See http://csszengarden.com/ and click a few "alternative stylesheets" and see what happens.

    g1smd,

Thanks for the link - fantastic demonstration of CSS. I've definitely underestimated CSS.

In the past I've been using CSS for fonts/colours etc, and tables for layout, but that's gonna change smile
