My domain registrar for my .co.nz domain (Domainz) says that it is impossible to lock a .nz domain. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

"lock a domain" with a .com registrar means that another person cannot register that domain without your express authority. By default, .com domains are usually unlocked; it is better to lock them to prevent unwanted transfers. I have locked the majority of my .com domains; but I was unable to lock my .co.nz domain.

I thought you could not register two domains of the same name anyway - when its taken its taken isn't it?

If a thief wants to steal your domain from you, he will place a transfer request with your domain registrar. Your registrar will email you to ask whether you approve the transfer. If you do not reply to that email (because it was lost among spam, your address has changed, or you were on an extended holiday):

1) If your domain is unlocked (which it probably is if you have not specifically locked it), the thief will be the new owner of your domain.

2) If you have locked your domain, you will remain its owner.

I found the answer to my original question. All New Zealand domain names are locked. To transfer the domain name, you need to type the Authorisation Key (UDAI), which the registrar will email only to the legitimate domain holder.

Sorry, I don't know about tld's other than .nz. In most cases .com domains can be locked for free and it is an easy procedure.
