Sorry if this has been "asked and answered" already, but I can't find anything.

I don't know how to set up a command to download music files; I would like it to ask "open now or save to file", etc., like I see on lots of sites. Obviously I haven't got a clue....

Can someone point me to a resource to learn how to do this?

BTW, this is for a band's own site and music.

    Thanks

It is the operating system of the surfer's computer that pops up that message.

Thanks, your answer points out how little I know about this! So what do I do? I'm probably asking something much more "basic" than you realize.

Thanks honda76, but I don't want to download files myself. I want people to be able to download music from a web site that I am designing.

    Hello Roatan,

I believe I have an answer to your question:

    1) Upload the file you want to let people download to your website.
    2) Make a normal link to it.

    For example:

Say I have "coolsong.mp3" that I want to make available for download.

I would upload it and then link it with the target pointing to: "http://www.mysite.com/coolsong.mp3"

With mp3 files the OS will ask the user if they want to download it, with files like rm, wma, and so on, streaming formats, the files will open in the media application you want them to, like with pdf files. You can force the download dialogue box to appear with any filetype by creating the correct header for that file, that's a server side thing, it's pretty easy to do with php, I use that technique a lot, especially for pdfs.
