I would like to check my build websites on multiple borwser versions.
But i can only instal 1 version from each browser. For example: i've installed IE 6, when i want to instal IE 5 it won't, because i have already a newer version.

Can i do this on one PC?
Or are there websites that check for these different browsers one by one.

I would also do this for mzilla, netscape, safari etc.

Thanx

Koen

Search Google for this: install multiple msie

but be warned, it's a pain to do, and it's not very reliable. And xp seems to have issues with that method.

I make life simple and just have 4 different windows on my box, multiboot, windows 98 with ie 4, windows 2000 with ie 5.5, another windows 2000 with ie 5.0, windows xp with ie 6.

Since IE css and html bugs are pretty well known and predictable, I usually only check 5.5 and 6 while developing, then when I'm done I go back and fix whatever major 4 or 5.0 issues I might find.

IE mac 5x is another story, that's a very buggy product, almost useless javascript support, completely unfixable css bugs that are pretty major, but that browser is fading away fast, and besides, its users are accustomed to see websites not work.

Plus of course all the other browsers. On linux I use konqueror, which is basically safari if you have the 3.3 version. Install Opera 7x and 8, mozilla/firefox 1.0, netscape 7.2, lynx for good measure and you're set.

Note that linux and mac will treat fonts slightly differently, in terms of size, kerning etc, and they also come with different font names, so you need to be careful in css to always have a default font, like serif or sans-serif in your font families. If you design a site with super close tolerances it won't necessarily work the way you think on all platforms or browers, better to give things a little breathing room.

Also easy to do is to run apache server on one machine, then use another machine, a laptop for example, to check the site as you develop it, kvm switches between two boxes can do the same more or less.

An invaluable resource is evolt.org, where you can grab pretty much every browser ever made.

Oh, it's not a bad idea to also have netscape 4x installed, mainly to make sure your page doesn't explode in that browser, avoidable by using @import rules for your css.

Best advice: develop in firefox/mozilla, debug for the rest from that, firefox has IMO by far and away the most consistent and reliable css support. IE < 6 does not support the standard css box model, so you have to know how to deal with that, I usually nest divs to avoid having to do box model hacks. If you don't know it yet, learn what 'quirks mode' means and how to deal with it.

"Or are there websites that check for these different browsers one by one."

Yes there are, but it's no substitute for live local testing, all you will see is a screen shot.
