that's just for divs and other block type elements, although I think you can use that on body and html too, can't remember.

So, what you're saying is you want to avoid having a horizontal scrollbar?

The best way to do that is to use a percentage-based width. You can mix and match pixels and percentages, BTW. Say you have a three-column layout and the outer columns are each 150 pixels wide. The center column then gets 100% of everything that's left of the screen. But I recommend keeping it ~95% to accommodate the width of the vertical scroll bar. Then the layout will re-size automatically based on the viewer's resolution and monitor size.

Keep in mind, though, that you've used up 300 pixels in this example, so if you put any images in the center column that are wider than 500 pixels, it will stretch the width and you will have horizontal scroll on anything at 800x600 or less.
