Got a problem with a number of .info domains I reg'd. They've expired 'cos the registrar (Webhozt) seem to have gone belly up and are not responding.

I need to transfer the domains but need the auth code from the current registrar - which I can't get as they've disappeared.

So... I had to complete a support request form at ICANN. Done it. Several times. Ages ago. They simply do not respond. I e-mailed them too. Same lousy level of 'service'.

Anyone got suggestions?

ICANN was supposed to have been fixing their customer service problems, looks like they still have a way to go. Use a reputable registrar next time, keep this headache you're now having in mind when you ask yourself if that extra $5 or so dollars a year is worth it. Just use one that's been around a long time, pairnic is good, register.com is too expensive, I don't know that many others, godaddy I use once in a while but I don't like how their system works, they are cheap though, but would also be my guess for a company that will also go out of business one day and simply vanish. I'm happy paying a little more to avoid such headaches.

lizardz, point taken but the I sort of 'knew' the guy running it from years of forum posting. Wasn't expecting him to disappear on me and it had nothing to do with funding on our part.

As for ICANN, still no word from them and I don't expect to ever hear from them. No way out of this one whilst they're happy to ignore all correspondence they received.

More on Icann here, here, and here. The last item is supposed to help fund the supposed improved customer service you are currently experiencing.

Paying a little more for domains rather than going for cheapest may sometimes be best. - Cheap doesn't always work.

These kinds of issues are good reminders to me, I'll keep paying 12-18 a year for a registrar that doesn't go away, is privately held, and has really good tech support, since I don't collect domain names that amount of money is pretty trivial over a year.

There should be a backup plan for when things go titsup.

Looks like there is no plan.

Or, if there is, that no-one knows what it is.

I've had this happen to me before, a client has a domain, they have an assistant, assistant quits unhappily, contact stuff was through assistant's email, nothing to do, had to wait for domain to expire to try to get it back. If you think about it, that's how it should be, although there should definitely be a provision for domain registrar going out of business.
