What's the difference? My webhost offers both. Any advantages going one way or the other? Thanks.

A domain means that you have your very own property on the web. Say "www.yoursite.com".
A subdomain is kinda like buying an apartment/flat in a co-op. Say "yoursite.mainsite.com."
If you are setting up shop with a business, it's best to get your own domain. It tends to look more professional and gives you your own identity when it comes to thinks like linking and search rankings.
That's not to say that you couldn't rank a subdomain really well...you can. Just that if you are setting up a business online, you really should have your own domain name.

The Jenn, I think snakedog is suggesting that his or her host offers both, but the domain has to come first as it were. I do not think he or she is being offered a slice of somebody elses cake by way of a stand alone subdomain.
Anyway, perhaps you could explain how to actually use subdomains in a practical way. Lets say for instance I have a site with for instance 5000 HTML pages each describing a seperate product or service. What do I do next ? I know how to create a subdomain, it is only a few clicks on cpanel, but once that is done, what next ?, Do we then upload a unique HTML page to that folder via FTP then submit to the engines each page or what ?
