For a teenager, I wouldn't say I'm a beginner at this stuff. I'm sure though, that I am a beginner compared to all of you. So please excuse my noob-ishness.
I'm very confused. So, I'm building my parent's website. They have a domain name already registered. When I am ready to put the site up, how do I go about it? I know I need a host, but how do I get one? (For free, nonetheless.) Every time I want to register with a host, I always have to register a domain with them to get the free hosting. But the domain is something I already have. Where my parents registered their site, at register.com, does not offer free hosting.
Basically, my question is: When it comes time to transfer my files, what do I do and how do I go about it - and with what service? Any ideas would really be of great help.
:D:D

You can't get free hosting. You must pay in some form to support the cost of running the server. If you do find a domain name hosting provider that doesn't charge anything in the form of upfront $$$, you'll end up being required to run ads for them to help offset the cost of running the server. If you can live with running ads for your host provider, that's the only other alternative available.
There are cheap hosting providers selling server space for $5 per month. Of course generally speaking, the cheaper the host provider is the less you get because they need to pack more domains onto the server. You'll share a server used by 700+ other people. The server might deliver your content slowly and customer service generally is not very good.

It's not true. There are few people who give free hosting for domains. But you need to spend lot of time searching them.
If you want to buy hosting, there are some good and cheap hosting companies.
Here is such one host, I am using: [link]

Dinkar, that link you posted may offer cheap hosting, but it's not free.
Like Curt said, you generally get what you pay for. Free (or cheap) hosting can be unreliable and less than responsive when you have a problem.
You could use a DNS forwarding service to send traffic from a domain name to your actual site (such as your ISP may give you where it's www.yourISPname.com/~yourusername) but you'll usually end up trapped in a frame to mask the actual addy. Then if you submit the domain name to search engines, what they'll find is a frameset devoid of indexable content.

You are right JQ. That host is not free. Please read this:
"If you want to buy hosting, there are some good and cheap hosting companies."
It was for cms0490. And that host is hosting my site and I found it very reliable. I posted that link as an example to show that there are few host that are cheap and reliable.
Back to main topic.
There are ... ok I should say there WERE free host that were providing real hosting space for domains. No www.yourISPname.com/~yourusername and search engines could index it using your own domain name.
I knew few such host in past. I don't know if they are still exist. That's why I said: you need to spend lot of time searching them.

Ok, I run few searches and visited many site + pages and found this one:
webdomains4u.com
Click "I HAVE ALREADY REGISTERED MY DOMAIN" button.
I don't know if they are good or bad. But they are free and allow your own domain name.

Go over to the phpbb forums if you want to get some more input on using free hosting. They've been seeing a wave of complaints about free hosters going bottom up lately. Free hosting is a very bad idea, don't do it.
The link dinkar posted offers as close to free as you can get. There is no such thing as free hosting in reality. Something will go wrong. Just off the top of my head, here's a few things: free hoster goes out of business, and since you also used them as your domain name registrar, you lose all access to the site, and the domain name. That one is very common. They use some type of framing for your site, which blocks all search engines from indexing the site. That one is also common. Site servers get so bogged down because they cram so many sites on it that it starts driving you insane. Non existent, or totally incompetent tech support.
Server hardware, bandwidth, and so on, isn't free, it has to be paid for. I think one of the plans dinkar's link had costs only like $3 a month. That is nothing, that is essentially free. If I knew somebody who wanted to host and not spend money, I'd point them to that, but I wouldn't help them resolve the technical problems when they came up.

I agree. Anyone who want to do business, should buy doamin and hosting.
cms0490, do some research on internet. Visit hosting related forums and ask who is cheap and good host.
And always ask questions before buying hosting. Ask anything, but ask. It will show how they are good/bad in helping their customers.
FYI: Our administrator 'bhartzer' also offer free hosting. You may try to contact him via forum PM.

The reason I say nothing is free is because the hoster needs to be able to get some sort of compensation like displaying ads on your site or charging for every sort of server support you ask for. If a host gave away everything, they'd go under. Also, just because a host is currently free, doesn't mean they will always be free. They may stay free for 6 month or a year just to build a customer base and then charge for hosting thereafter. It makes no sense for anyone to maintain totally free hosting and can't think of anyone who would do that.
I'd think bhartzer would eventually want some form of compensation (ie. banner ads or something that pays the bills).
