I found a domain name from Direct NIC fit my keyword, i am interested to buy it. The problem is, only .us and .biz is available. My questions: what does all these extention mean? I am staying out of US, can I register a domain name by .us? Will these .us extention affect my search engine ranking in the future?

thanks,
Steven Leam

Unless the company which runs the website is located in the US and/or the site is hosted in a US-based hosting company and the site is targeted at the US, there is little point in buying this .us domain.

To purchase a .us domain you need to be a US citizen or your organization or business should be based in US. In case of .biz there is no such restrictions or criteria anyone can purchase it.

.us generally refers to a site form the US, though most are, in fact, .com

.biz was, IIRC, designed to designate a "business" website, though again, most are .com

You can basically thing of all those extensions as a way for the company selling them to make a few more bucks on popular domains. wink

Stick with .com domains - it's worth it and there are plenty of good ones still available. just be sure to select one that is easy to remember, first and foremost. Don't worry about whether it has the keyword you want in it.
